include presentations, journals, tests, quizzes, portfolios, etc. Creativity, problem-solving and working in teams are vital components of learning and student assessment.  PowerSchool will be a valuable tool for students and their families to use regularly to understand learning, and to discuss solutions when assessment results have been lower than student potential.  Note that PowerSchool captures some grades but is not exhaustive and cannot reflect the daily learning conversations students have with their teachers and fellow students, which become part of the formative assessment whereby teachers understand achievement.

Supporting Timely Submission of Learning Tasks

While teachers strive to coordinate project, assignment and test dates, there may be times in which students are not able to complete all their assigned work.  Students should discuss any requests for extensions with the individual teacher before the due date.  Asking for extra time after the due date does not reflect a conscientious approach. It is the student’s full responsibility to ensure that any work that accumulates, due to absences from school, is collected and completed within a reasonable amount of time. If - following an extension granted between teacher and student - work is still not complete, the teacher may be required to suspend further opportunity to submit work for assessment and credit purposes. Parents will be made aware of the extension offer, to promote a successful submission. Decisions around timelines for completing work are made on a case-by-case basis, and through a lens of both promoting equity, while strengthening student personal responsibility.

Appeal Process

An appeal process is in place where families are concerned about inaccurate assignment marks, report card marks or grade placement.  For marks throughout the year, please see the teacher first to resolve any problem.  Should further discussions be necessary, a student would book an appointment to meet with the Assistant Principal.  At the end of the year, a day is provided for parents to meet with the school to discuss year-end marks if necessary.

Semesters and Reporting Periods

There are two school semesters: September to January (Semester I) and February to June (Semester 2).  In Grades 7-9 the daily timetable for learning in Term 2 may change based on the complementary classes students have been enrolled in.  Students will receive two report cards (at the end of January and the end of June).  There will be three Learning Conferences throughout the year – in September (for students with IPPs), November and March.  It is highly recommended that both parents and students attend the Learning Conferences together. The CBE has a common K-9 Report Card, using a numeric scale from 1-4:

4 –The student has demonstrated excellent achievement of grade level expectations

3 –The student has demonstrated good achievement of grade level expectations

2 – The student has demonstrated basic achievement of grade level expectations

1 – Not meeting grade level expectations

Special assessment criteria are used for students that are English Language Learners, or that have an Individualized Program Plan.  Students are also assessed on Character, Citizenship and Personal Development, using a CBE qualitative measure.
