Dear Woodman Families:

It was a memorable week - visiting the Henry Wise Woodman High school drama production, floating on the Bow River to investigate water quality, and demonstrating excellent skill and sportsmanship at numerous badminton tournaments.

During the non-instructional day today, teachers were occupied with many responsibilities – preparing for PATs next week, finalizing Track and Field participants and working on IPP transition plans.

Take note of the important messages for the week of May 19-22. Mon. May 18 is a statutory holiday and there is no school.  Students return to regular classes on Tues. May 19.

Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) Season Commences!

Students in Gr. 6 and 9 will participate in their first round of PATs on:

  • Tues. May 19                           Gr. 6 French Language Arts, Part A, Writing
  • Wed. May 20                           Gr. 9 French Language Arts, Part A, Writing
  • Thurs. May 21                         Gr. 9 English Language Arts, Part A, Writing

As was previously communicated, we expect consistent school attendance, punctual arrival and full engagement in PATs on designated days. Any arrivals after 9:15 AM cause disruption and a compromised exam writing experience. Regular classes continue in the afternoon.

Yellow School Bus Registration is Now Open for 2026-27

Families can now apply for yellow school bus service for the 2026-27 school year. To ensure service is in place for the first day of classes, registration must be received by Sunday, June 14. Registrations submitted after this date will be accepted; however, access to bus routes may be delayed. Of note:

  • Conditional Rider forms will be available starting Monday, June 15.
  • Confirmed bus routes will be posted for families who registered by the deadline in MyCBE in late August.
  • The transportation fee has increased from $360 to $500/rider and from $180 to $250 for one-way kindergarten riders.

For several years, CBE was able to limit fee increases by using surplus funds to help offset rising costs. These funds were generated by delaying the implementation of shorter transportation eligibility distances for two years. However, those surplus funds are now nearly exhausted.

At the same time, transportation costs have continued to rise, driven by factors such as increased fuel prices and the need for specialized supports. As a result, a fee increase is necessary to balance the budget and maintain current service levels for students.

We remain committed to supporting families. Fee waivers and supports will be available to ensure students continue to access the transportation services they need.

Families can cancel without financial impact by submitting a cancellation form by Sept. 30.

Feeder School Orientation – CTF Symposium, Thurs. May 28

We will welcome over 200 new students into the school on May 28.  Incoming students from Janet Johnstone, Chinook Park, and Haysboro schools will be participating, along with all new Late French Immersion 7 students from varying neighbourhoods in south-west Calgary.  Activities will be led by Leadership 9 students, and will include a tour of the school, a viewing of the drama production, “Wizard of Oz”, snacks, and participation in a CTF Symposium in the Learning Commons.  The Symposium will feature the wide selection of complementary courses offered at Woodman, which students will soon select for their timetabling in the 2026-2027 school year.  Note that existing students at Woodman will also be invited to the CTF Symposium in the afternoon, to help them make the best decision about their preferred complementary classes for next year.

Cultural Potluck, Tues. June 24

Our Wellness Team is teaming up with our Leadership students to put together a day full of celebration of the many cultures that are represented at Woodman School on Wed/, June 24th.

We warmly invite families and students who are interested in participating to either contribute a dish that represents their culture and/or create a visual display (like a science fair project) to share information and bring awareness to their cultural background. Through the following Google Form https://forms.gle/1C5Qr7o5PtEwQt179, participants will be able to indicate how they would like to be involved and get more information. Currently, we are gathering interest, and if you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Reeves mlreeves@cbe.ab.ca or Mr. Homewood smhomewood@cbe.ab.ca. We hope to come together to create a meaningful and memorable celebration of culture.

Wellness Day, Wed. June 25 – Pick Your Adventure!

Our final Wellness Day will take place on Wed. June 25th, and the theme will be Celebration. The morning will follow a “pick your adventure” format, where students in Grades 7-9 can sign up for a variety of activities both on and off campus, and with associated costs or cost-free options. Grade 6 students have an awesome opportunity to go to Roller Palace for some indoor rollerblading, and Grade 5 students will go climbing at Chinook Climbing Centre. Please take a moment to sign up students (grades 7-9) to help teachers plan accordingly. Link attached here. We are also looking for parent volunteers. Please reach out to mLreeves@cbe.ab.ca for questions and to volunteer. We can only run these events with extensive volunteer support, and we thank you in advance for considering how you can give your time. We look forward to ending the year on a positive, inclusive, and celebratory note together.
