Dear Woodman Families:
We email you at the end of another successful Wellness Day. Today we drew on strong support from community partners in helping our students navigate the use of their electronic devices and online presence, and to use these tools for good purposes. Please ask your child about the digital citizenship lessons they learned today.
Take note of the following messages regarding the week ahead, March 4-8.
Power of Voice – Youth Event at Calgary Public Library
Woodman is a partner school with Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth. This Saturday, an important event is planning for newcomer youth, from 8:30-2:00 pm. See the poster for more information.
Student Leadership at Woodman
The Leadership 9 class wishes to thank families for their generous support of the Calgary Food Bank drive. Classroom tallies are being counted and results will be shared with students early next week.
Leadership 9 students are an active vehicle for strengthening student voice. They will meet with Education Director Poirier, who will visit the school on Monday, for a conversation about their impact on school experiences and priorities at Woodman.
Francophone Fun in March!
Our vision for this month’s celebrations is for all of our students to have an authentic experience with, and deepening understanding of francophone culture in Alberta, across Canada, and globally. We also wish to build positive relationships with incoming feeder school students through our celebrations, while commemorating the 50th anniversary of the French Immersion program in the CBE.
For this upcoming week, we look forward to:
- “Manie Musicale”, in which students listen to, and vote upon their favourite popular francophone musicians from across the globe
- “Concours d’arts oratoire”, in which students present a speech on a topic of interest, and present before their peers in an assembly (Tuesday)
- Annual tradition: poutine and beavertails food truck (Wednesday)
- “Tire sur la neige!” – Maple Taffy for all (Friday)
- Lumberjack Day (come dressed up on Friday!)
- Lunchtime activities, such as “Tour de Woodman”,Trivia Contest and Bonhomme Photobooth
Use of Personal Cell Phones / EarBuds at School
Woodman has a well established process for supporting students with the effective use of personal electronic devices. As a reminder, see the contract that families signed at the start of the school year: Acceptable Use of Technology Agreement
We regularly reinforce expectations for students, and we ensure that common practices are exercised between all teachers in all classrooms. This upcoming week, we will be reinforcing the expectations that wireless headphones and earbuds (such as Airpods) must remain in lockers along with cell phones unless being used for a specific learning purpose, and under teacher direction. This assists students with reduced distractions and increased presence and focus within the classroom environment. Thank you for reinforcing this message at home as well.
Woodman School Planning Survey Closes March 5!
Please provide your voice on school planning, budget and fees for 2024-2025. Thank you for the participation thus far. Results will be shared at the March 12th school council meeting.
