Dear Woodman Families:
The Grade 9 students had a profitable day of learning through Junior Achievement at SAIT this week. Students mentioned that they learned about gross vs. net pay, how taxes are calculated, how to budget effectively, and how to prepare for an interview. Almost 100 students in the Outdoor and Environmental Education class practiced their climbing skills through daily field trips. Thank you to the teachers for their exemplary organization of real-world learning opportunities for our Wolves!
Note a few important messages for the week of May 5-9:
Dates of Cultural Significance
At Woodman, we honour the cross section of traditions, languages, and celebrations that are commemorated throughout the calendar year. May is Asian Heritage Month and Canadian Jewish Heritage Month. The Learning Commons regularly displays resources and texts that allow students to see themselves and their culture. Incorporating culturally responsive texts and practices into school life allows us to foster a deeper sense of belonging for everyone.
Band Camp Drop-Off and Pick Up
The main and parking lot doors of the school will be open at 7:15 am on Monday morning. To reduce major congestion, families are encouraged to drop-and-go. If accessing the staff parking lot, please vacate it by 7:45 am, to allow for staff arrival. Band students will gather in their teams in the main gymnasium for attendance and to await instructions. Please do not park on the school-side (north side) of 86th Ave, as coach buses will be parked and loading students. Parents of participating students will receive an email on Wednesday afternoon with an estimated arrival time and instructions for retrieving students. This is a culminating event for the music program, and we thank the large number of parent volunteers and teachers for their support and supervision.
Track and Field Season
The beautiful weather this week has increased opportunities for outdoor learning. Many Physical Education classes are being held outdoors, especially as we launch the Track and Field season on Monday. Students are expected to have athletic clothing and footwear to change into daily. It is preferrable that students wear the Woodman gym strip, or Woodman colours (red/black).
Mental Health Awareness Week – May 5–11
Mental Health Awareness week is May 5-11. The Community Education Services team in partnership with Recovery Alberta has nine sessions throughout the month of May to highlight and help provide more information for educators and caregivers on various topics related to mental health awareness. To see all the sessions offered, dates and times please click here.
Test Alert on Wednesday, May 7, 2025
On Wednesday, May 7 at 1:55 p.m., the National Public Alerting System will send a test alert across Alberta to all broadcast platforms. During the test, an alert will sound, followed by a text message letting cellphone users know the sound is part of a test and there is no need for concern.
