Dear Woodman Families:

The return to classes on Wednesday provided important opportunities to re-connect with colleagues and students. The positive energy of our students was evident. We acknowledge these challenging times, and are committed to recovering routines and rituals, as well as progression in learning. Woodman is a cohesive school community, and we will move forward with strength and purpose.

We enjoyed the many creative Halloween costumes today. We wish our students a safe and fun Halloween night.

Note the important messages of the week ahead, Nov.3-7:

Woodman Casino Weekend!

Thank you to the many parent volunteers who signed up to participate in this weekend’s casino fundraiser (Nov. 1-2).  We are grateful for the funds that are secured for enriched learning because of this event, which occurs every 1.5 years.

Individualized Program Plans – Delayed Completion

Teachers had begun to work on creating goals and strategies for students with IPPs, following parent/student input meetings on Sept. 29. With this input in mind, we are now working diligently on completing them, circulating them on Nov. 24.

Gr. 9 Take Our Kids to Work – Wed. Nov.5

Take Our Kids to Work is a Canadian program which encourages employers to offer on-site learning opportunities for Grade 9 students, to assist them in considering their future career pathways. This year, Woodman teachers will be focusing on regular classroom instruction based on the programs of studies they teach.  Parents whose employers are participating in the program are welcome to have their Grade 9 child participate.  Please email the school (woodmanattendance@cbe.ab.ca) to report your child’s excused absence if they are participating.

  • Email title: Take Your Kid to Work
  • Content: Student first/last name, grade/homeroom and name of participating employer

Remembrance Day Commemoration – Fri. Nov. 7

Given timing constraints, Woodman will participate in a scaled down and personalized commemoration of Remembrance Day this year.  We will focus on Canadian identity and the gratitude for sacrifices Canadian service members have made to maintain peace in our country. Students will be encouraged to reflect on how to foster peace in their relationships and in their local and broader communities.

Student Holiday Market Interest Meeting – Tuesday Lunch

Attention, budding and veteran entrepreneurs! A meeting will be held on Tues. Nov.4 in the Learning Commons (first half of lunch, bring your food) for all students interested in being vendors at our 5th annual student-driven holiday craft market. Students will need to commit to weekly meetings (Tuesday) and to making their sale items on their own time.  The craft sale will take place over four lunch periods during the last week of school before the winter break in December.

This will be a fundraiser for a charity of the student vendors’ choosing. Table fees will be charged, and students are encouraged to donate a portion of their after-expense profits. If your child is passionate about crafting, baking, jewelry making, knitting, card making, etc., please encourage them to participate in this Woodman tradition.

The event is facilitated by student leaders, Ms. Ginger (school assistant) and Ms. Heron-Mykyte (library assistant).

Update: Gr. 8/9 SAIT Skills Exploration Day

Thank you for the interest expressed in participating in the SAIT Skills Exploration Days.  Unfortunately, we are left with inadequate preparation time to design and build the prototype and will therefore withdraw from the event for this year.
