Dear Woodman Families:
It was a busy week, with Grade 5-7 students enjoying their first Wellness Days. Thank you to the efforts of Leadership 9 students and teachers in putting smiles on students’ faces, and in helping them develop confidence and friendship in their new school.
We extend a thank you to the large group of professional musicians for the clinics they offered to new Grade 7 band players this week. The experience was generously funded by the Woodman Music Parents’ Association.
Note the important messages of the week ahead, Sept. 29-Oct. 3:
Long Weekend for Students
Monday, Sept. 29 is a non-instructional day in the CBE. Woodman teachers will be meeting with parents of students on Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) and developing learning plans in teams. Tuesday, Sept. 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and the school is closed. Students return to school on Wed. Oct. 1.
Mural of Memory and Meaning
Thanks to the generous support of the School Council, Woodman students will engage in an artist-in-residence project with Michelena Bamford. The pre-work commenced this week, with students identifying symbolic cultural objects to express cultural traditions across generations. Students have been requested to bring a cultural object to school next week; these could include dreamcatchers, eye amulets, Celtic stones, etc. The mural development will include these objects, along with multilingual words that convey what community means to each student, in their heritage language. The mural will be mounted in the north east hallway and be a symbol of our beautiful and diverse school community. More updates will be provided to families throughout the next two months.
School Picture Order Due: Oct. 1
Photo proofs were sent home with all students who had their picture taken on September 15. Lifetouch has set a due date of October 1 in order to get photo packages back quickly. Most families purchase their school photos online, but those wishing to pay via cheque or cash may include payment inside the return order form envelope and hand it in to the main office.
Please note that retake day is Wednesday October 22.
Sign Up: Gr. 8/9 SAIT Skills Exploration Day
We are excited to invite students to participate in Skills Exploration Days, an engaging opportunity to explore hands-on learning and gain experience in practical skill areas connected to future career pathways. An invitation is extended to Grade 8 and 9 students currently enrolled or who have been previously enrolled in the Construction program. Participation will allow students to build on their existing knowledge, collaborate with peers, and discover new areas of interest through guided activities. To ensure a high-quality experience, admission will be capped at 25 students. In addition, students who are selected will be expected to attend meetings at least once a week to support preparation, teamwork, and ongoing skill development.
Interested students are encouraged to submit their expression of interest promptly, as spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Further details regarding dates, activities, and logistics will be shared with those who secure a spot. Please submit your expression of interest to Mr. Pérez (haperezcorbo@cbe.ab.ca) at your earliest availability.
CBE Transportation Fees
This week, families who registered for CBE Transportation for the 2025-2026 received an email with details related to fees and how to make central payments through My CBE. Families have until Sept. 30 to cancel registration.
Child and Youth Well-Being Series, Recovery Alberta
The CBE invites all parents and guardians to join a live online series on supporting child and youth well-being. The series is hosted by the Recovery Alberta Community Education Service (CES) Program in collaboration with local experts from the Calgary community. The sessions are designed to provide families with knowledge, tools, and strategies to help navigate the challenges and opportunities of raising children and teens today. Session details are available on the Child and Youth Family and Caregiver Series public facing page.
School Council Executive Roles Open
Woodman School Council is looking for volunteers to take on small, but significant positions! Please reach out with any questions or to express your interest to parentcouncilwoodman@gmail.com .
We are looking for:
- Volunteer Coordinator who works with Woodman office staff to set up a volunteer database, to organize available and cleared volunteers, and to consistently communicate with Woodman office staff regarding all volunteers.
- Staff Appreciation Coordinator who develops a yearlong plan to ensure that Woodman staff feel consistently appreciated throughout the school year. The staff appreciation coordinator will then execute the events, recruiting other parents to support as needed.
- Key Communicator who works to build and enhance a connection between school communities and the Calgary Board of Education. The key communicator will attend COSC meetings held by the CBE throughout the year and report at school council meetings what was shared. COSC meeting dates have not yet been set.
- Secretary who records and shares the meeting minutes.
