Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,
This update serves to inform that a lottery will not be required for incoming Grade 10 students. The overflow provision, however, will remain in place for Western Canada High School.
This decision was made given the current number of registrations of Grade 10 students for the 2025-2026 school year. This means that all regular program CBE students who are currently in Grade 9 and designated to Western Canada High School, and any registrations currently in SchoolEngage for the 2025-2026 school year and received prior to Feb. 11 at noon will be accepted.
However, the overflow for new Grade 10 to 12 regular program student registrations will remain in place until no longer needed. The overflow is necessary in the event that registrations by new students during the school year exceed the capacity of the school.
Additionally, the designated overflow receiver school has been changed to Queen Elizabeth High School as there is projected to be more space available long term for students in that location.
Effective immediately, new regular program registrations for the 2024-2025 school year and beyond that cannot be accommodated at Western Canada High School will be overflowed to:
Will transportation be provided for students overflowed to Queen Elizabeth High School?
High school students are assigned to Calgary Transit as their mode of transportation. Routes can be accessed at www.calgarytransit.com through the “Plan a Trip” tool. While CBE works collaboratively with Calgary Transit, decisions on service levels are made by Calgary Transit based on available space and resources.
No Changes for Current Students at Western Canada High School
Current students designated to Western Canada High School will remain at the school for the 2024-2025 school year and beyond, provided they do not move out of the school boundary.
No Changes for Current Students Overflowed to Crescent Heights High School
Current students who have been overflowed to Crescent Heights High School for the 2024-2025 school year will remain at the school due to the capacity constraints at Western Canada High School, provided they do not move out of the school boundary.
Regular program students who have been overflowed to Crescent Heights High School or are overflowed to Queen Elizabeth High School will remain on a call-back list. If space becomes available, they will be given an opportunity to transfer back to Western Canada High School.
We are continuing to work on solutions to accommodate students at Western Canada High School and will continue to provide updates to impacted students and parents/guardians.
