Dear Woodman Families:
It was a joy to welcome back our students from spring break. We want to convey to you that Woodman students are a truly special group. The standard of conduct in classrooms and in the greater school environment is commendable. Parents do not have the privilege of observing this, but our staff does. Please pass on our gratitude to your children this evening.
Take note of the following messages regarding the week ahead, April 8-12:
Grade 6 PAT Update
Alberta Education has announced that Grade 6 PATs in English Language Arts and Mathematics will not be administered in May and June 2024. At Woodman, Gr. 6 students will be completing the Science 6 and Social Studies 6 PATs only. All Grade 9 PATs will be administered in May/June 2024, as previously communicated. Dates have all been added to the “Important Dates” section, below. Questions about PATs can be directed to: EDC.PATS@gov.ab.ca or to Principal Krickhan.
Basic Facts Boot Camp
Throughout the month of April, select students have been invited to participate in a Basic Facts Boot Camp, to build strategies for memorizing basic multiplication and division facts. These are fundamental to mathematics success. The camp will take place in Room 8 with Mme. French.
May 3 “Pick Your Own Adventure” Sign Up Begins Wednesday
The Wellness Committee has completed the planning of a day filled with exploration, self discovery, and rejuvenation. On Wednesday, during Physical Education (PE) class, students will learn more about the range of options they can select from. The Wellness Team we will put together each group hoping to have our students placed in their desired activities. A complete list of activities and associated costs will be sent to families on Tuesday in order to have a conversation at home about the most well suited options for you. Costs vary between activities, and have been off-set by the financial support of the Woodman School Council. Throughout this school year, the School Council has contributed $4000.00 towards subsidizing Wellness Day costs.
Artist-in-Residence with Author, David Bouchard
From April 22 to April 26, Woodman has the great opportunity to have author David Bouchard completing a poetry workshop with us. The week will begin with a presentation from the author himself where he will share some insights on poetry, writing (especially with a disability such as dyslexia), and how to get inspired. Then, he will visit with each homeroom once throughout the week to provide feedback and support on the students’ poems. Afterwards, homerooms will have a spoken word ‘slam’ to select a class representative to prepare for the culminating activity. On Friday, May 10, we will have a school-wide Spoken Word slam where each representative will share their poem. This assembly will be recorded to share with families and we would like to showcase the physical poems in the halls. Learn more about David Bouchard through his website: http://davidbouchard.com/.
There is a cost of $20 per student for this week of rich literacy learning and inspiration. Fees have been posted to MyCBE.
Family Movie Night, Thurs. April 25
Our amazing Leadership 9 students would like to invite all current and soon-to-be Wolfpack families to join us for a special family-friendly movie night on Thursday, April 25. We are proud to be showcasing Pixar’s hit movie, “Cars.” With doors opening at 6pm, and our feature film starting at 6:30pm, we want to invite as many of you as possible to join in this exciting community opportunity. Tickets will be $2 each at the door, and concessions will be available throughout the show. Though we will have folding chairs available, you are encouraged to bring your own beach chairs, pillows, picnic blankets, or anything else to make yourself comfortable.
All proceeds from this event will be going towards off setting student costs for their Grade 9 Farewell. Please take a moment to let us know you are coming by clicking the link below, how many tickets you will need, and what school you are from.
