Dear Woodman Families:
We welcome our Grade 9 students and teachers back from their school trip to Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City. The week was packed with culture, language, and learning about the historical development of the region which would later become Canada. Prepare to enjoy the best photos of both the Sailing and Quebec trips in the 2024-2025 Woodman yearbook (for sale in My CBE fee portal, and available to students on June 26).
Note a few important messages for the week of April 28-May 2:
Spirit Week
Grade 9 Leadership students visited classrooms last week, and have made creative posters around the school, to celebrate Spirit Week. Welcoming in the month of May, students are encouraged to participate wholeheartedly, with points being collected for each Wolf Pack:
- Monday Crazy Hair Day
- Tuesday Vacation Day
- Wednesday Colour Day (dress in one colour!)
- Thursday Character Day
- Friday How Glow Can You Go?
Monday is Student Vote!
As was previously communicated, Woodman students will have the opportunity to cast their vote in the federal election on Monday, through the nation-wide Student Vote. The Woodman event will be led by Gr. 9-6 and 9-7 students, who have re-created their classroom to simulate a real voting station. Fostering civic duty and public engagement is at the heart of this project and will involve all Grades 5-9 students.
Climbing Field Trips – Environmental and Outdoor Education (ENVOE)
Students participating in Grade 7/8 ENVOE classes look forward to their upcoming climbing field trips this week. All forms and fee payments must be complete in advance of the trip.
- Grade 7 April 28/29 (AM)
- Grade 8 April 30/May 1 (AM)
Grade 9 Junior Achievement Field Trip – SAIT, Wed. April 30
Students are known to say, “Why didn’t school teach me the most important things I needed to know as an adult?” The Economics of Success program, facilitated by volunteer professionals from various fields, serves to answer this question. Students learn to budget, examine career clusters, and identify potential post-secondary destinations. Given the value of the experience, it is expected that all Grade 9 students will participate. Students will depart for SAIT in yellow school busses at 9:15 am, therefore it is imperative that they arrive to school punctually. They will return back to school in time for Period 7 classes.
Grade 7/8 Gauss Math Contest – May 14
Grade 7-8 Math teachers will be speaking with students to encourage them to test their Mathematics skills through a nation-wide contest on Wed. May 14. Participating students may pay a small fee to their Math teacher to confirm participation in the contest. The school will be subsidizing a portion of the registration cost per student. Let’s get courageous about demonstrating our knowledge in Mathematics!
The Purpose and Value of Provincial Achievement Tests (Grade 6/9)
All students in Alberta - in Grades 6, 9 and 12 - complete standardized exams in May/June, called Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs). School wide PAT results provide an important accountability measure, and ensure that students are being properly taught the outcomes of the programs of studies by each teacher. Individual and school results allow teachers, families and students to understand how a student is doing in relation to the province, CBE and other like schools who offer French Immersion programming. Woodman Grade 6/9 students who are writing PATs will receive an initial (June) and official (October) report which resides in their Official Student Record.
First Round of Grade 6/9 Provincial Achievement Tests (May 27-29)
Students in Grade 6 and 9 will participate in their first round of exams and PATs on:
- Tues. May 27 Grade 9 French Language Arts, Part A, Writing
- Wed. May 28 Grade 6 English Language Arts, Part A, Writing
- Thurs. May 29 Grade 9 English Language Arts, Part A, Writing
Please re-schedule any other activities and appointments, to ensure students are present at school on PAT days. Students should be well rested, well-hydrated and with snacks/water to sustain them through the morning.
Grade 7/8 Year-End Assessments
At Woodman, we see value in having students develop test writing skills in low-stakes environments, to best prepare them for the provincial, standardized exam setting in Grade 9. To that end, Gr. 7-8 teachers have worked in teams to develop common year-end assessments in all core subject areas (Science, Math, Social Students, English Language Arts and French Language Arts) that reflect the outcomes of each grade level. Year-end assessments will occur throughout the middle to latter portion of June and will be communicated directly by each specific teacher. Individual student results will be communicated on Power School and are used as an assessment piece for the purposes of the semester 2 CBE report card.
