Woodman Weekly Dec. 18-22 | Holiday Market, Santagrams, Locker Clean out / Lost & Found, High School Open Houses, French Immersion Review, Athletics

Dear Woodman Families:

Students had an energizing Wellness Day today.  Many students said they wished they could have stayed on longer at the Calgary Dream Centre, and visiting young friends at Haysboro, Chinook Park and Janet Johnstone Schools.  Grade 7-9 students then put their dance skills from the Sound Kreations residency to the test, and rocked the house during the holiday dance in the gymnasium.

Over 300 socks were filled with donated goods for the Calgary Drop-In Centre!  Thank you to the Woodman community for their impressive generosity.

Take note of a few important messages for the last week of school before the break, from Dec. 18-22:

Student Holiday Market – Lunch Times (Monday-Thursday)

It will be an active week ahead, with a large Student Holiday Market open to all Woodman students. The market will be held on a daily basis over the lunch hour, in the Learning Commons.  As was previously mentioned, students are invited to bring cash to purchase treats and holiday gifts.  The Calgary Humane Society has been named by students as the charity of choice in which to donate a portion of their proceeds.. Examples of products and prices include:

  • S’mores making kit $5
  • Glass bead bracelets $3
  • Bath bombs $3
  • Handmade beeswax candles $3
  • Crocheted animal plushie keychains – $3.50 - $5
  • Vanilla and chocolate cupcakes $2.50
  • Pins $1
  • Stickers .25 cents
  • Gingerbread man cookies, brownies, butter tarts, rootbeer cookies $2 each
  • Lollipops $1
  • Magnets $2

Note a few important messages for the parents of student vendors:

  • There is no need for students to bring a cash float
  • Student vendors will miss their Period 4 class on Monday, in order to set up their products in advance of the lunch hour.
  • Parents can bring supplies at 11:45am on Monday and stay for setup until 12:20pm
  • Items can be stored in a locked room between markets
  • Cash will be stored in the vault between markets

Santagrams on Sale!

Leadership 9 students will be selling Santagrams ($1.50) in the main foyer during the lunch hour of Monday and Tuesday.  Consider presenting a friend with a small sweet treat before the holidays.  Supplies are limited.  Deliveries will occur to the student recipients on Friday.

Locker Clean-Outs and Lost-and-Found

Students will be given time next week to organize their lockers, throw out accumulated goods, and take home all water bottles, food remains, etc.  All accumulated coats, shirts, boats, etc. will be organized on a lost-and-found table for students to view and retrieve. Families are also welcome to come by the main foyer during regular office hours (Monday-Thursday 8:30-4:00) to claim lost items. All unclaimed items will be donated to Women in Needs Society in January.

Feeder High School Open House Information

Both Dr. E. P. Scarlett (DEPS) and Henry Wise Wood (HWW) will be welcoming our Grade 9 students for school tours on January 29th, during the school day. Woodman teachers will accompany students to their new high school. All students will attend the tour at their designated school.  All French Immersion students in 9A, B, and C will attend the DEPS tour, and all Regular Program students in 9D and E will attend the HWW tour on that day.

Current out of area students whose designated schools are different from those above will be communicated with individually. Students and their parents considering transferring to a program at a school other than their currently designated one should attend the evening Open House at their chosen school. At those events, there will be information about the CBE High School Transfer Process, which applies to all families considering a different program or school than designated according to their current school, program, and address. Both DEPS and HWW have Open Houses in the evening on January 29th for that purpose (DEPS is from 5:30-6:30 and HWW is from 6:00-8:00).

Please review the Woodman High School Information D2L shell for further information and details about high school transition.

Woodman French Immersion Program Review

CBE Languages, in conjunction with administrator committees, have worked over the last two years to establish an internal monitoring system of the quality of CBE language programs. The intention of establishing a program review process is that all students and staff across the CBE would understand and implement common expectations, standards of practices, and experiences. Woodman School has been named as one of six schools to pilot the program this school year. The Woodman pilot program will be facilitated by a CBE language specialist, and will include administrator, teacher, parent and student representation.  The committee meets for the first time on Mon. Dec. 18. More specific information will be shared with families throughout the process and final results/recommendations will be shared in the spring.  Email Principal Krickhan (woodman@cbe.ab.ca) if you have any specific questions.

Athletic Updates

Wrestling

We encourage wrestling team members to attend all Tuesday and Wednesday after school practices, in order to be in the best form possible for the quad meets in January.

Volley Season Commences

The volleyball season and try-outs for junior/senior girls and junior/senior boys will commence on the week following the return from winter break.  Senior tryouts launch on Mon. Jan. 8.  Messaging will be shared with students during PE class by mid-week. All final details will be communicated to families in the next Woodman Weekly on Fri. Dec. 22nd.

School Council and Educational Society Minutes

Please read the draft minutes that were taken of the meetings held on Nov. 28:

8 More Casino Volunteers Needed - Jan 19 & 20, 2024

We are still in need of 2 main volunteers for January 20 at 11am - 7:30 pm and 5 backup roles for January 20.  We also need 3 backups for January 19.
If you are able to help us, please sign up below.  Your time volunteering at the casino brings in $70,000+ for the school.  This money helps purchase computers, musical instruments, gym equipment, and much more.  Our last casino helped us put in the playground our students enjoy daily.

To volunteer you do not need security clearance. If you are able to volunteer please sign up at: https://signupschedule.com/woodmancasino or email woodmanvolunteers@gmail.com with any questions.
