Dear Woodman Families
It has been an active week – with high school tours, wrestling, CBE Well-Being symposium, the publication of Semester 1 report cards, the anticipation of new option classes, the nervous excitement of the first volleyball games of the season, and – the jazz workshops added to the mix, during today’s non-instructional day.  At Woodman, we keep our students busy!

Please take note of the important messages for the week of Feb. 3-7:

Student Helpers for Woodman Open House – Thursday, Feb. 6

Your child may have been invited by their teacher to participate in the upcoming Open House.  We know that the best promoters of our school are the very students who are excited to be here.  We expect a full house.  As such, only current Woodman students who have received confirmation from their teacher should be in attendance.  Parents are asked to drop off students at 6:15 and retrieve them again at 8:15.  Wear your Woodman clothing if you have it!  If not, teachers may be able to provide a loaner.

We ask Woodman families to invite any neighbours or other interested contacts to join us for this exciting evening showcase of our school, and consider registering for 2025-2026: Link: Open House

TREX Art Exhibit – “Inseparable Fragments”

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX) as been installed in the Learning Commons – a second exhibit this school year. In this solo exhibt, “Inseparable Fragments”, artist Santosh Korthiwada uses digital photographic collage to journey through a blending of his memories of life in India and in North America. The art captures some of the artist’s personal longing, resilience, wonder and adaptation that are so often found in the immigrant experience. This exhibit is especially relevant to Woodman - as welcome newcomers to Canada, while also promoting the values of preserving our culture and diversity. Woodman Processes for Cold Weather

We anticipate colder temperatures during the upcoming week. These are the processes we follow when temperatures or the wind chill exceed -20:

  • School doors open earlier, at 8:45 am
  • Alternate noon hour plans are launched, and students are provided with indoor spaces to socialize and keep physically active
  • Daily, school-wide messaging around safety measures are increased

Please encourage your child to dress warmly.  This is especially important should there be yellow school bus delays.

Healthy Hunger – Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays

The lunch hour at Woodman is 40 minutes and allows for only minimal time to walk to local restaurants to purchase food.  For this reason, and particularly in winter, we encourage students to bring their own packed lunch, or participate in the Healthy Hunger program.  Healthy Hunger is a convenient way to provide choice to students, and may alleviate lunch preparations at home.  Log on to www.healthyhunger.ca to register and order for January and February.  Vendors include:

Feb. 4     Opa!

Feb. 6     Boston Pizza

Feb. 7     Jelly Donut

Feb. 11   A&W

Feb. 18   Saucy Bread

Feb. 20   Subway

Feb. 21   New York Fries

Feb. 25   South Street Burger

Feb. 27   Mary Brown

The school is not permitted to store food overnight.  Please check the Woodman calendar to ensure that orders are not made on days when students may be on field trips. Unclaimed orders are donated to students in need at the end of each day.  We extend our apologies for the scheduling error for this Fri. Jan. 31.

IPPs Sent Home, Fri. Feb. 7

Expect to hear from your child’s Individualized Program Plan (IPP) key teacher with an updated copy of the IPP by Friday. IPPs are living documents that can always be adjusted based on student, teacher, and parent input.  Goals that have been reached are changed, and goals that have not yet been reached have different strategies or measures added.  Teachers work intentionally to help student voice be strong in the development of IPPs.  Thank you for the support at home in teaching our students to embrace learning differences.

Grade 9 Pascal Math Contest

Each year, Gr. 9 students are encouraged to challenge their mathematical skills by participating in the extra-curricular Pascal Contest from the University of Waterloo.  The contest will be held on Feb. 26 (Learning Commons). Questions are based on curriculum concepts common to all Canadian provinces, with a few questions designed to test mathematical ingenuity and insight. Interested students should pay $2 cash to their Math teacher.  The school will subsidize the remainder of the cost per student.
