Dear Woodman Families:
Our students were smiling and happy to be back together again, and to resume a more consistent daily schedule. It has been a very positive week in classrooms, hallways, and through extra-curricular activities.
Please take note of the important messages for the week of Jan. 13-17:
Option Change Requests for Semester 2
Students who wish to request an option change for the upcoming Semester 2 should take note of the following important details.
Due to class size limitations and current availability, it is important to understand that not all option change requests can be accommodated. Priority will be given to students who may be missing an option because they were absent from school when options were being selected in May/June of last year, or those who have recently arrived at Woodman in the past few months.
Students who fall into these categories, are encouraged to make their request by visiting Mr. MacCarl in the Learning Commons during the lunch hour between Tuesday, January 14 and Thursday, January 16. Please be aware that option change requests will not be considered after Thursday, January 16.
The following options are full for next semester and will not be available for option changes:
- Grade 7: Construction, Outdoor Education
- Grade 8: Outdoor Education
- Grade 9: Design Studies, Leadership, Health Care Services, Outdoor Education (A day), Power Up (A day)
Please keep these details in mind when considering requests, and make sure to visit Mr. MacCarl within the specified days/times.
Student Holiday Market Reflection Meetings
Student leaders of the Holiday Market in December are requested to participate in a Mon., Jan. 13 lunch meeting in the Learning Commons. Students will reflect and plan any modifications for next year. The following Mon., Jan. 21, all student vendors are invited into a similar lunch meeting to finalize proceeds and the donation amounts to the Calgary Food Bank. Announcements of these lunch meetings will be made during the school day in advance, so all students remember to participate.
Registration Closed: Glass Fusion Workshop
Thank you for the strong interest expressed in participation in a unique glass fusion workshop on Wed. Feb. 12. Parents who registered by the deadline will receive a confirmation email next week, with instructions for paying the corresponding fee in Power School. Note that full payment is required in advance of the workshop date.
School Dance – Fri. Jan. 24
Leadership 9 students are excited about responding to student requests for a school dance. The dance will be held in the main gymnasium, with separate Grade 5-7 and Grade 8-9 groupings. Students will be encouraged to showcase their new dance moves learned through the last Physical Education module in December. School dances are a valuable way to increase self-confidence and personal identity, while keeping physically active.
Student Council: Looking for Guest Speakers from Diverse Cultures
Each week, an engaged group of Grade 8-9 students meet to discuss school priorities. Currently, the Student Council is digging deeper into survey data from last year, as well as from student experiences in school related to two themes:
- How can we improve on respectful treatment between students?
- How can we promote greater cultural understanding and appreciation for our diversity?
Students are exploring various strategies, including hosting optional lunch sessions for those students interested in learning more about different cultural and language groups represented within the school. If you are a parent, grandparent or other family member (or if you have connections with community members) with an interest to share stories, artefacts and photos of your cultural identity, please email Principal Krickhan (woodman@cbe.ab.ca) to express interest.
