Dear Woodman Families
Students and staff appreciated the mild temperatures this week, to enjoy community walks and be outdoors over the lunch hour. Teachers are in the midst of an intensive reporting season.  Information was shared at the School Council meeting regarding the careful, team-based processes that are used to determine summative grades. Report cards are released in MyCBE on Tues. Jan. 28.

Please take note of the important messages for the week of Jan. 20-24:

2025-2026 Registration | Open Now!

We are open for registration in all three programs of the school – Continuing French Immersion (Grade 5-9), Late French (Grade. 7) and English Community Program. CBE decisions around registration eligibility are based on family address and catchment area. Note that families who have moved out of our catchment area throughout this school year but are still attending Woodman should inform the main office.  Registration at your designated school for 2025-2026 will be required.  To confirm, key in your current address to determine designated school: Find a School.

For all other students, registration is automatically rolled over from this year to next year, with no paperwork or registration processes required.

Should families have plans to move out of the area or province, or those who are electing to leave Woodman for any other reason, are requested to please email this information to woodman@cbe.ab.ca

Over the next week, we will be visiting south-west elementary and middle schools to advertise the Grade 7 Late French Immersion program. Bold signs will be placed in key south-west neighbourhoods leading up to the annual Open House. Encourage your neighbours, friends or family members to attend the Open House on Thurs. Feb. 6, 6:30 pm.  This is one of most highly attended and interactive evenings of the school year. See the invitation on our school website: Open House

Health and Life Skills Instruction

To ensure that students are well supported in living a healthy life, Health classes are taught during specific times of the school year. During this critical time in their development, adolescents benefit from regular instruction about social, emotional and physical health. Later in January, teachers will commence instruction on the components of human relationships and sexuality within the Alberta Education Health and Life Skills program of studies. Information and parent consent letters will be circulated via email next week. All students participate in this aspect of human sexuality and relationships, unless a family opts out by completing and return the form, requesting an exception.

Student Holiday Market Reflection Meeting | Monday

All student vendors are invited into a quick meeting at the start of the lunch hour to finalize proceeds and the donation amounts to the Calgary Food Bank.

Practice Lockdown with Calgary Police Service | Tuesday AM

Twice annually, all CBE schools practice emergency procedures in the event of an internal or external threat.  We provide clear instructions to students in advance of the practice.  Teachers are well versed in responding to a wide range of potential emergency situations.  We will be joined by members of the Calgary Police Service, who will facilitate the lock down practice.  During the practice, main telephone lines will not be monitored, nor will parents wishing to pick up or drop off students be permitted to gain entry into the school.  Please prepare your child at home for this practice by reminding them of several important safety measures:

  • When students hear the warning, “Lockdown!”, they must quickly enter the first classroom door that is nearest to them.
  • Students must remain in their lock down location in complete silence during the duration of the practice.
  • Any cell phone use is prohibited.  Students should always have cell phones in lockers, as per the Woodman Digital Citizenship Contract.

AHS | School Immunization Mon. Jan. 27

Alberta Health Services School Immunization Program will be at Woodman on January 27, 2025, to immunize Grade 9 and other eligible students. Students who are eligible to receive immunizations at school will have received an immunization consent package. Please review the information, fill out the consent forms, and return these forms to the school as soon as possible (if you still have the package). If you received a Request for Vaccination Records, please fill out the form and follow the included instructions for providing immunization records to Alberta Health Services. The School Immunization Program follows the Alberta Immunization Schedule. If you would like more information about the immunizations that your child has been offered, please visit the website www.ahs.ca/immunize. The School Health Nurse will be at school over the lunch hour this upcoming Tuesday and Wednesday, if students wish to ask any questions. Note that the AHS Immunization schedule will be adjusted in a way that will still permit all eligible students to be immunized, while also participating in high school student tours.

BelCanFran International Exchange Program

Families who attended the School Council meeting on Tuesday learned about an excellent exchange opportunity to France for Grade 8-9 students.  Students who return after studying and living in France for 11 weeks have gained irreplaceable language skills.  We wish our students safe travels, who are participating in this exchange, and who are departing for France early next month.  Consider registering for 2025-2026: Brochure
