Woodman Weekly Jan. 22-26 | Student Advisory Meeting, Funding Increase, Registration, After School Program, Minutes, Athletics

Dear Woodman Families:

This week, students demonstrated patience and strong cooperation with indoor lunch processes, given the cold temperatures. Our students continually make our work worth the efforts.

Today and tomorrow are important fundraiser nights at Cowboys Casino.  Thank you to the 40 parents who are volunteering their time for a fundraising effort that results in significant financial benefit to Woodman.

Take note of the messages regarding the week ahead, Jan. 22-26:

Student Advisory Meeting – Monday at Lunch

Students possess many creative ideas around how to improve their school.  We have been analyzing student survey results from the Our School Survey, which was conducted in October. Ms. Krickhan, Mr. Homewood and Leadership 9 students are interested in mobilizing student voice into positive action. Please encourage your child to come with their lunch to the Design Lab on Monday (beside the main foyer) to participate in this advisory process.

Supplementary Provincial Funding Increases

In the School Council meeting this week, we shared that Woodman has recently received a healthy supplementary funding increase.  These provincial funds are directed to schools where increased enrollment has occurred since Sept.30. Funds will be directed in the following ways, commencing at the end of January:

  • The addition of a part-time teacher to support English Language Learners and leadership priorities
  • Increased budget allocations in numerous areas, including Career Technology Foundations, Environmental and Outdoor Education, and Physical Education programming

This funding boost is positive for Woodman and will be well directed towards improving the learning experiences across the school.

2024-2025 Registration – Open Now!

We are open for registration in all three programs of the school – Continuing French Immersion (Grade 5-9), Late French (Grade 7) and English Community Program. CBE decisions around registration eligibility are based on family address and catchment area. Encourage your neighbours, friends or family members to attend our annual Open House on Thurs. Jan. 22, 6:30 pm.  See the on our school website.invitation

Calgary Bridge Foundation – Friday After School Programming

Families that have arrived to Canada in the last 1-2 years are being offered ongoing supports to adjust to their new life.  A Friday, after-school program was offered to these students (Grade 7-9) through classroom visits in December. The after school program, entitled NEXTGEN, runs from 1:30-3:30 for 12 weeks.  See the poster for contact and registration information.

Woodman School Council Minutes

Thank you for the lively conversations about Woodman, hosted at Tuesday’s meeting. Our vision, and what actions we take to fulfill our vision, requires the voices of all.  We encourage families to pop into a virtual meeting whenever they can.  The next meeting is on Thurs. Feb. 13.  See the draft minutes from Jan. 16 to learn more:

Athletic Updates

Thank you to the high numbers of students who came to try out for the four volleyball teams. Students can experience understandable disappointment when not selected. We encourage any interested students who wish to continue to develop their skills to drop in to lunch time intramurals, which will provide them with additional play time outside of their regular Physical Education classes.

All players have received their acknowledgement of risk forms.  We request that families pay the corresponding player fees in Power School as soon as possible, preferably in advance of their first game.  This allows the school to cover referee and other costs.

Woodman will be hosting nine game nights throughout the season.  The Calgary Middle Level Schools Amateur Athletics (CMLSAA) has set common spectator expectations for students.  All students who wish to cheer on their own school team, are invited to watch the first game, at their home school.  Student spectators who are visitors in another CBE school must be under the supervision of a responsible adult.  We welcome Woodman students to cheer on their home teams at the upcoming games on Monday and Tuesday.

To our Woodman Wrestlers, we wish them very good luck at the upcoming quad meet on Thursday.
