Dear Woodman Families,
Today felt like a celebration of the end of a successful Semester 1. The Leadership 9 class planned an interactive, (noisy) and social school dance in the main gymnasium. For many students, it was their first middle school dance. Students who preferred a quieter experience enjoyed board games in the lunch room instead. Special merit is extended to our own, in-house DJ, Mr. Homewood.
Please take note of the important messages for the week of Jan. 27-30. Note that Fri. Jan. 31 is a non-instructional day in the CBE and there are no classes for students. On this day, teachers will be working on completing Individualized Program Plans (ready for circulation to parents on Feb. 7), and participating in transition meetings with Dr. EP Scarlett High School.
Dates of Cultural Significance
In alignment with the values of inclusion and diversity in the CBE, Woodman wishes to acknowledge communities that will be celebrating important festivals and dates of significances:
Jan. 29 Lunar New Year – Year of the Snake
February Black History Month
February 17 Family Day
Feb. 25 Pink Shirt, Anti-Bullying Day
Feb. 28 Losar
Ramadan Begins
Semester 1 Report Cards Live on Monday
Report card writing is an intensive period of collaboration, consultation with colleagues, compilation of assessment evidence, peer editing, and administrative review. When the report cards become live for families and students to view on Monday, know that they have been crafted with much diligence, oversight, and personalized care for the academic, physical, social and emotional growth of each student.
The Principal Report in the January School Council highlighted ways teachers are working together to ensure that students have clear learning intentions and receive actionable feedback. Parents were also provided with a recommended checklist:
- Set a distraction-free environment to view the online report card together.
- Reflect on Character, Citizenship and Personal Development progress – these are vital foundational skills upon which all good learning grows.
- Celebrate the “Strengths” that teachers have commented upon in each course.
- Talk through the personalized “Areas for Growth”, and clarify goals for Semester 2
- Communicate with teachers (via email, or by booking an appointment during the March 20-21 Learning Conferences, booking information will be communicated within the next month).
To learn more about how to view online report cards in Power School My CBE, view information on the CBE corporate website.
Semester 2 Grade 7-9 Student Timetables
Students are looking forward to the beginning of new option classes, which commence on Tuesday. We are proud to provide a rich array of choices for students, including: Band, Drama, Design Studies, Environmental and Outdoor Education, Art, Ceramics, Health Care Services, Power Up Your Learning, Training in Excellence in Sport, and Foods. Students’ new option classes are viewable in the Power School app. Students will also be provided with a hard copy of their Semester 2 timetable by their teacher on Tuesday morning. As communicated previously, there will be no further opportunities to change option classes, following the lunch time appointments that had been made available to discuss possible changes last week.
Learning Commons Grand Re-Opening
We are excited to announce that the Learning Commons has completed the reorganization of books into genres. Some of the most popular genres include:
- Fantasy (FAN)

- Historical Fiction (HF)
- Horror (HOR)
- Real Fiction
- Hilo (high interest - easy reads) (HILO)
- Romance (ROM)

Woodman students may view where their favourite books are located, through CBE E-library: https://ims.cbe.ab.ca/.
