Dear Woodman Families:
We concluded last week with a vibrant school visit by approximately 200 incoming students of the 2025-2026 school year, from 20 different south-west schools. The future of Woodman in our English, Late French and Continuing French Immersion programs is bright! We thank the staff that was involved in the planning and preparation of this successful feeder school event.
Please note a few important messages for the week of June 2-6:
June Learning
We greet you at the onset of the last month of the school year, with an invitation to continue to support our students in giving their best efforts towards hard work, while participating positively in many moments of celebration. Family support is appreciated, in having students arrive to school punctually and ready to learn, as well as adhering to the expectations for student conduct.
June is Pride Month and National Indigenous Peoples’ Month
As a public school system, we welcome students from diverse backgrounds, perspectives and beliefs. The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) strives to ensure that all schools are safe and caring places for students and staff, including 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff. We welcome this time for increased reflection and action on how to foster inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive.
June is also an exciting month for Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing, and knowing. All CBE staff, students, and families are invited to participate in upcoming city-wide events. Check out the Indigenous Awareness Week Calgary website for a list of celebrations and gatherings happening throughout the week of June 14–21, including a powwow on Saturday, June 14 at the Elbow River Camp.
Grade 9 Farewell – Tuesday, June 3, 2025
We anticipate a very special evening at Heritage Park with our Grade 9 students on Tuesday (6:00-10:00). A separate email will be send to Grade 9 families on Monday, outlining final details.
Honeybee Merchants Come to Woodman – Grade 7
Science teachers are looking forward to providing real world learning for their Grade 7 students on Monday and Tuesday, through a live demonstration of honeybees and their value to the ecosystem. Students will meet real, live honeybees, learn how honey is made, and explore the life of a bee. Presentations will be available in English and French. On-site field trips reduce commuting time, as well as costs related to securing transportation. We look forward to the experience!
Grade 9 On-Site Science Field Trip – June 5/9
To inspire and create real-world Science experiences for students, Grade 9 teachers have planned an on-site virtual reality space exploration event for our students. Students will explore the celestial bodies of the solar system – including planets and their moons, while focusing on characteristics of other planets and how they compare to Earth. Grade 9 families have been informed about the event, along with the corresponding fee for the field trip.
Woodman Indigenous Garden Installation – Fri. June 6
Through the generous funding of the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the Jane Goodall Foundation, and through consultation with an Indigenous elder, Woodman School developed a concept for the installation of an Indigenous garden in the north-east corner of the school yard. Given City of Calgary water restrictions last June, the native plant species - selected by the student and teacher working committee - could not be planted. A great deal of study and research has been invested into the project over the last several years, and we look forward to the project finally reaching completion. Various student groups will be involved in the planting on June 6th. More information about a full school welcome to the outdoor learning space will be shared shortly, and in anticipation of National Indigenous Peoples’ Day on June 21.

School Council Message: Staff Appreciation Luncheon – Fri. June 13
The School Council would like to take a moment to thank our amazing Woodman staff for their continued dedication and hard work throughout the year. As the school has been delving into the many cultures represented at the school with the students, we felt we should show our appreciation by providing some traditional food for the staff to enjoy.
If you are interested in providing food, hands on help, or even napkins and plates. Please click on the link below and sign up.

Building Resiliency in Today’s Youth | Community Education Services | June 5 | 12 – 1:30 p.m.
Before High School graduation, one-third of adolescent girls will experience depression, anxiety disorders, self-harm or an eating disorder. However, there is an incredible power in caregivers who can support our youth, both young women and men, before they seek therapy. In a 1.5 hour workshop presentation, steps and strategies from the Juno House Therapeutic Model® will be shared, that will provide effective emotional coaching tools for today’s youth as they develop through adolescence and into young adulthood. This workshop is designed to give caregivers the skills to become their child’s emotional coach.
