Dear Woodman Families,
We had a very special evening at Heritage Park on Tuesday, celebrating the accomplishments of the Grade 9 generation of students.
Congratulations to our badminton teams, who finished their season of play last week. Grade 7-8 finished in second place and Grade 9 finished in first place!
Take note of the important messages for the week of June 3-7.
June – A Time for Celebration and Recognition
June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada. In order to learn how Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing and knowing can support our well-being, the CBE Indigenous Education Team invites CBE staff, families, and community members to participate in a 4-week June Wellness Challenge. This wellness challenge aims to (re)align our spirit, heart, body, and mind to enhance our well-being and to build intercultural understanding. Take part in the 4-week Wellness Challenge independently or with families, friends, or community members.
June is also Pride month, a time to recognize the pursuit of equality and rights for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. The CBE and Woodman School reaffirms its commitment to creating safe and caring learning and work environments for 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff. We do this in numerous ways throughout the school year, and not only in June - through the inclusion of authentic texts, resources and voices of members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
June – Final Assessments and Reporting
Teachers are intensively involved with compiling and analyzing evidence of student learning, for the purposes of creating Semester 2 report cards. During the assessment season, the CBE has disabled Power School Grades. Parents may view online report cards from June 26, 2024 - July 26, 2024 (8 AM). For additional supports (e.g., videos, guides etc.) with Attendance and Assessment and Reporting, refer to Technical Support for Students & Parents.
International Exchange to France – Lunch Meeting on Wednesday
Each year, a few Grade 9 students participate in an 11 week exchange with a student from France, through the BelCanFran program. Students in Grade 7-8 are invited to bring their lunch to the Learning Commons on Wednesday to learn more about the experiences that two of our Grade 9 students had this year. Both students became much more fluent and confident French speakers. We encourage as many Woodman students as possible to enrich their life and cultural experiences through future participation.
Track and Field Meet, Thurs. June 6, Foothills Athletic Park
Finalists for the upcoming, annual Track and Field Meet were announced earlier this week. Over 100 Grade 6-9 students have qualified to participate. Note a few informational items:
- Parent consent forms and payment information ($20) were circulated this week; please ensure payment is made in Power School, in advance of the event
- Athletes will require their own transportation to the Foothills Athletic Park at 2431 Crowchild Trail NW.
- There will be a food truck available on site for purchasing snacks; the school recommends students bring ample water, snacks and a hearty lunch
- This is a low, flexible supervision of students while at the track meet; students must represent the school well and cooperate with teacher instructions, or parents will be requested to pick them up from the facility early
- Students are not permitted to leave the Foothills Athletic Park Track Facility unless being picked up by their guardians
Regular classes will be running at the school this day. Students who are not selected for the team may not attend the event. Should non-participating Woodman students report to the facility, their parents will be called to request that they be retrieved.
Come One, Come All! Year-End Music Concert, Thursday June 6, 6:30-8:00 PM
Approximately 150 students will display their musical development in a dynamic, year end concert. We thank our feeder high school, Henry Wise Wood, for hosting us in their expansive school gymnasium. Extended family members, friends, and prospective new families interested in attending Woodman next school year are all warmly invited to attend. Please enter through the main doors of the school, which open at 6:00 PM. Henry Wise Wood student guides will be available to receive and direct audience members. Note that Grade 7-9 student performers should arrive by 5:30 PM and Grade 5-6 students should only arrive at 6:15 PM, in order to be seated with their parents.
5km Course Virtuelle
This upcoming week, the students of Training in Excellence in Sport (TES) will be participating in a virtual 5km run organized by Fédération du Sport Francophone de l’Alberta. The grade 7, 8 and 9 students will be racing during TES class to reach their 5km goal by the end of the week. Students across Alberta will be participating in the event. It will be a great way to get active in the Francophone Community and to conclude the Track and Field season.
School Council: End of Year Staff Appreciation June 14
Please help us to show our appreciation of Woodman School staff by providing a food dish for them to enjoy at lunch on Friday, June 14. We would like to encourage a variety of food enjoyed by people around the world to share connections between culture at home and the multicultural environment at Woodman School. All food is welcome and appreciated. Please label your dishes.
