Dear Woodman Families

We acknowledge the vast efforts by teachers, parent supporters, and students last week - in having concluded a successful volleyball season and performed with impressive style at the senior band concert in the Jack Singer Concert Hall.  Special thank you to our feeder high school, Dr. EP Scarlett, for their organization and vision of the event.

The Francophone events each day last week provided all students with authentic language and culture opportunities. Highlights included a vibrant live performance by Folklofolie, a tire sur la neige in front of the school, and a daily exploration of popular music from the global Francophone community. Congratulations to the 9-6 class for winning the ice castle challenge; they will enjoy a poutine party this upcoming week.

We are entering the last week of classes prior to Spring Break. Take note of a few important updates for March 17-20.  Be reminded that there is no school for CBE students on Fri. March 21st.  Woodman families and staff will be participating in Learning Conferences.

Virtual Learning Conferences, Thurs. March 20 and Fri. March 21

As was previously communicated, Learning Conferences will be virtual, through Microsoft Teams. Conference times (10 minutes) may be booked with your child’s teachers on Thursday, March 20, 5:00-8:30 pm and Friday, March 21, 9:00-2:00 pm. The online booking tool, accessed through the MyCBE parent portal, will remain open until March 19, 11:59 pm.  Instructions for booking may be found here:

MyCBE School Conferences Support

Virtual Conferences Tips:

  • Log in 1-2 minutes before the start of your conference time
  • Wait in the virtual lobby and teachers will admit you at the designated time
  • Cameras and microphones should be on for all participants to enhance good communication.
  • If you are a CBE employee, ensure that you are accessing the MicrosoftTeams link through your personal, not CBE email address. This ensures parent access, not meeting organizer access

General suggestions for a successful 10-minute conference:

  • Ensure that your child is present and participates in the meeting
  • Verify posted grades on Power School leading up to the conference
  • Frame your conversation around: “What has my child excelled in since the report card?” and “What are the action steps (2-3) that we can focus on for the remainder of the school year?”
  • Be sensitive to start and end times, to allow teachers to progress through their conferences in a timely fashion

Student Survey Administration – Monday

Students will be provided with an annual student survey that helps us assess their experiences and levels of satisfaction with their school experience.  On Monday, students will complete student surveys, as follows:

  • Grade 7 – Alberta Education Assurance Model Survey
  • Other Grades – CBE Student Survey

For more information on the CBE Student Survey, read the following letter: X

Grade 7 Parents – Complete the AEAM Survey

Last week, Grade 7 parents were informed about the importance of participating in a provincial survey about their experiences at Woodman School.  As of today’s date, 26 out of 162 families have completed the survey.  We would appreciate a strong response rate.  Email woodman@cbe.ab.ca if you have any questions about how to complete the survey.

Lost and Found

Students have been provided with daily reminders to visit the display of lost and found items. Parents are also welcome to stop by the school during regular office hours (8:00-4:00 pm, Monday-Thursday) to search for misplaced items.  All unclaimed items will be donated to Women in Need Society by the end of the week.

Locker Clean-Out

This week teachers will be providing students with time to tidy their lockers, discard food and beverage containers, and ensure they are bringing their gym strips home for laundering.   Keeping the school tidy and clean over the holiday period is our priority.

Main Office Closes – Fri. March 21, 2:00 pm – Mon. March 31, 8:00 am

There will be no staff monitoring main office telephone lines or email addresses over the period of Spring Break. We wish our students and staff a well deserved break from work during this time.

Raising Digitally Resilient Kids – Parent Workshop

Media Smarts is Canada’s Centre for Digital Media Literacy. Parents looking for additional information following the Calgary Police Service Youth Link presentation on March 4 may be interested in this self-paced workshop: Raising Digitally Resilient Kids. The focus is on helping families balance the risks and benefits of digital media.

Badminton Season Postponed

Continued extra-curricular and evening restrictions are in place because of labour action.  This will affect the upcoming badminton athletic season, which is being postponed in all CBE middle/junior high schools. Badminton instruction continues in Physical Education classes and during lunch time intramurals. For all information related to labour action, reference the Q and A on the CBE corporate website:
