Dear Woodman Families
Woodman students continue to inspire us – with more than 60 participating in the first touch football practice on Wednesday. Woodman student-athlete representation at badminton tournaments throughout the week was also very positive. Thank you to our feeder school, Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School, for hosting the tournaments, and to our teacher-coaches who always give so much of their time.
Note a few important messages for the week of May 20-23. Mon. May 19 is a statutory holiday and the main office will be closed. Regular classes resume on Tues. May 20. We wish our Wolves a happy long weekend.
Spring Music Concert – Wed. May 21, Henry Wise Wood High School
The band and music program has outgrown our school gymnasium! Therefore, Henry Wise Wood High School is again opening their doors to host this final musical event of the year. As was previously communicated to families by Mr. Bane, be reminded of important logistical requests to help make the evening smooth and successful:
- All Grade 5-6 and Gr. 7-9 band students are expected to be in attendance, in order not to compromise the overall effect of each performance
- Students are encouraged to dress to impress: white collared shirt with black bottoms and black shoes
- Band students must remember to take their instrument and music home with them at the end of the school day, since the Band Room will not be open for retrieval in advance of the concert start time
- 5:30: Arrival for Grade 7/8/9 students
- 6:00: Doors open for parents/invited guests
- 6:15: Arrival for Grade 5/6 students; note that there is no Woodman staff supervision available before or during the concert; therefore, students must be within direct supervision of their parent for the duration of the event, and seated with them in the audience until they are called upon
- 6:30-7:30 Concert
- There are no tickets being sold for this performance; cash donations are much appreciated, which assist with enhancing music program offerings in the future
CBE Chief Superintendent Joanne Pitman Visits Woodman!
This Fri., May 23, we are honoured to receive special guests into our building, to learn more about and celebrate school life together with us. Chief Superintendent Pitman and Area 6 Director Yeung have shown great support to our triple-track program offerings, and they value the learning and enrichment opportunities we provide our students within the middle years. The visit will include a special focus on how we support diversity, promote language learning, and uphold high standards for citizenship, personal development and learning excellence.
Grade 8 Science Field Trips
Given the current challenges with securing yellow school busses, we were not able to proceed with the planned field trip to Calaway Park for Gr. 8 students. An alternate field trip was well into its planning stages and was unexpectedly cancelled because of renovations that were announced at the site. We regret any disappointment caused to our students and thank you for your understanding.
Feeder School Orientation – CTF Symposium, Fri. May 30
We will welcome over 200 new students into the school on May 30. Incoming students from Janet Johnstone, Chinook Park, and Haysboro schools will be participating, along with all new Late French Immersion 7 students from varying neighbourhoods in south-west Calgary. Activities will be led by Leadership 9 students, and will include a tour of the school, a small assembly, snacks, and participation in a CTF Symposium in the Learning Commons. The Symposium will feature the wide selection of complementary courses offered at Woodman, which students will soon select for their timetabling in the 2025-2026 school year. Note that existing students at Woodman will also be invited to the CTF Symposium the following week, to help them make the best decision about their preferred complementary classes for next year.
Woodman Library Books Due: June 6
All books are due back to the Learning Commons on Fri. June 6. Mme. Heron-Mykyte, Library Assistant, will provide overdue reminders to students. Students who have not returned their library books by June 20 will be billed $15 per book, which will be added to the Power School fees account.
Earlier this year, Mme. Heron-Mykyte provided students with an orientation to their student membership to the Calgary Public Library (CPL). We strongly encourage students to seize the opportunities offered by the CPL, especially daily reading in English, French and heritage languages. Creating a daily habit of reading for pleasure, especially over the summer months, promotes increased vocabulary, critical thinking, empathy, and well being.
