Dear Woodman Families
Orchestrating today was no small feat. This last Wellness Day of the year was full of healthy social interaction, physical activity, and learning about pastimes that promote mental health and well being. These aspects of learning are as vital as academic learning, and foster well rounded development in our teens.
Take note of the important messages for the week of May 6-10:
Band Camp Has Arrived!
Over 120 Grade 7-9 students are leaving for three days of musical learning at Camp Caroline on Monday. This is our largest field trip of the school year, and is being led by Mr. Bane, Mme. Walker, Mr. Homewood and Mme. Rude. Thank you to the efforts of the Woodman Music Parents’ Association for all of their fundraising this school year. This has ensured that any student who wishes to participate in band camp does not encounter financial barriers to do so. Special thanks to the parent volunteers who are accompanying students on the trip.
Note that, in order to support the best learning while away, the Grade 7 writing exam, originally scheduled for May 9, has been postponed for all Grade 7 students. A re-scheduled date will be communicated shortly.
Alert – Traffic Congestion on 86th Ave, 8:30-9:30 Monday
Several large coach busses will be parking along 86th Ave SW from 8:30 onward, which is the arrival time for parents dropping off students going to band camp. Coach busses will depart at 9:30. CBE yellow school busses must have space to drop off students at their regular time, 9:00 am. Do not park or stop on the south side of 86th Ave. at any point during this time, in order to facilitate the needed student safety.
May 3 Field Trip Fees Now Due
For any students who selected bowling, climbing or beach volleyball field trips during today’s Wellness Day, please ensure that payments are made in MyCBE as soon as possible. Doing so allows us to pay our vendors on time and remain financially accountable.
Emergency Test Alert Across Alberta
On Wednesday, May 8, 11:55 a.m., the National Public Alerting System will send a test alert across Alberta to all broadcast platforms. During the test, an alert will go off followed by a text message letting cell phone users know the sound is part of a test and there is no need for concern. The Government of Alberta and Alberta Education believes that these test alerts can serve as an important teaching moment for Alberta's youth.
Grade 7/8 Gauss Math Contest – May 15
5Gr. 7-8 Math teachers have spoken with students to encourage them to test their Mathematics skills through a nation-wide contest on Wed. May 15. Over 100 students have expressed interest! Participating students may pay the $2 to their Math teacher to confirm participation in the contest. The school will be subsidizing a portion of the registration cost per student. Let’s get courageous about demonstrating our knowledge in Mathematics!
Grade 9 Farewell Forms Due: May 16
This week Grade 9 students received all the needed information for participation in the classic tradition at Heritage Park. The event, beginning at 6:00 pm, is hosted for students and staff, and celebrates the growth, memories and friendships that have flourished while at Woodman. Please submit forms to homeroom teachers by May 16 at the latest, so the school can confirm numbers with Heritage Park. The $60 payment is now due in MyCBE. We thank the Woodman School Council for their annual contribution towards Grade 9 Farewell costs. Leadership 9 students, through Healthy Hunger and other fundraising efforts throughout the year, are also subsidizing the cost for families who would benefit from the support.
