Dear Woodman Families
Thank you to the corporate work places and individual businesses that invited Grade 9 students to learn alongside their parents, during the annual Take Our Kids to Work Day. Over 50 students participated in the day, while those remaining on campus participated in a series of online workshops and presentations sponsored by Alberta Health Services. We hope these experiences inspire our students to think about their future in new ways.
Woodman commemorated Remembrance Day in a poignant way. The quality of playing of the senior band was exemplary. Grade 7 students shared vignettes about their experience at Field of Crosses on Memorial Drive. Student voices conveyed commitment to building a peaceful society. It was an important moment for our school community to express gratitude for all those who have preserved peace in our country until now.
Today was a day of meaningful learning for staff across the CBE. We spent time learning more about the Holistic Lifelong Framework, and how to incorporate Indigenous knowledge systems and oral traditions into school life, to the benefit of all students.
As we commence the Fall Break, we wish our families and staff a needed pause from the busy pace of learning. The main office telephone lines and staff emails will not be monitored in between Nov. 9-13. We look forward to welcoming students and staff back on Thurs. Nov. 14.
Take note of a few upcoming events and announcements:
Career Exploration Days – One-Time Grade 9 Opportunity!
Woodman has been selected to participate in the Skills Exploration Day event on Dec. 3, 2024. Any interested Grade 9 student is invited to participate, to a maximum of 25. The event includes being provided with a Learn-a-Skill Kit to build a “dwelling place” prototype. Students will test their new trade and technology skills, and then come together for an interactive live-stream (Dec.3) to build and share their projects with student participants from other schools across Alberta. Learn more through the following link: https://skillsalberta.com/resources/skills-exploration-days/
Student participants must be available to commit to morning meetings (8:00-8:45) on the following days:
- Fri. Nov. 15
- Mon. Nov. 18
- Fri. Nov. 22
- Mon. Nov. 25
Email Mr. Perez, CTF Learning Leader (haperezcorbo@cbe.ab.ca) to indicate interest.
Southland Bus Evacuation Drill – Fri. Nov. 15
The bus evacuation drill originally scheduled for Oct. 31 needed to be postponed to Nov.15, for riders of Southland Transportation. This will result in increased congestion on 86th Ave. from 8:55-9:15 am. To ensure safety for students involved in the bus evacuation, we request that parents dropping off students from their personal vehicle do so in an alternate drop-off zone – such as on the west side of Elbow, the St. Gerard church parking lot, or on 7th St. SW.
CBE Superintendent Turner Visits Woodman – Fri. Nov. 15
We look forward to receiving special visitors into our building. Superintendent Turner and Education Director Yeung will visit classrooms, connect with student leaders and meet with school administration to learn more about our celebrations, school learning data, and areas for continued growth and development. A highlight of the visit will include witnessing how French and English language learning is being better supported because of the recent increase in school funding.
Spirit Week Continues – Nov. 14-15
Leadership 9 students invite our Wolves to have a little fun upon the return from Fall Break:
