Dear Woodman Families,
We enjoyed receiving our students back from their Fall Break. It was an active two-day school week.

Today we welcomed CBE senior leadership to participate in the life and learning at Woodman.  We are grateful to CBE Superintendent Dr. Turner and Education Director Mr. Yeung for their palpable support of the needs and program priorities of our school.  Dr. Turner expressed how evident the values of inclusion are at Woodman - as well as the celebration of diversity and support for language learning.

Take note of a few upcoming events and announcements for the week of Nov. 18-22:

Parent-Teacher Conferences November 28-29

Reporting on student achievement through an “oral report card” is important at the mid-point of the first semester of school.  Students are encouraged to attend together with their parent(s).  In-person conferences will be held on Thurs. Nov. 28 (4:00-8:00 PM) and virtual conferences will be held on Fri. Nov. 29 (9:00-1:00 PM). Each conference is 10 minutes in length and may be booked online, beginning on Thurs. Nov. 21, 6:00 pm. Parents will receive an email on Monday, with instructions about how to book conferences. If you did not receive this email, please contact the main office to ensure that the school has your correct email address on file.

Modified Re-Designation Plans – South-Central CBE Schools

Woodman families received communication yesterday with updated information regarding how the CBE will accommodate growth in a number of neighbourhoods and schools.  The impact to Woodman in the near future will be reduced, with anticipated increased growth in the upcoming 2-4 school years. Highlights of the changes involving Woodman may be found on the “Re-designations in the New Plan".

Grade 9 High School Transition D2L Shell

We encourage parents to continue to regularly log into the D2L shell, together with their Grade 9 child. All current information about high school Open Houses, processes, and opportunities is outlined in the shell. There are numerous events in the upcoming two weeks, details of which are included in the “Important Dates” section, below.

Career Exploration Days – Last Chance for Grade 9 Students!

There are a few spots left for interested Grade 9 students to participate in the Skills Exploration Day event on Dec. 3, 2024.   Participation will allow students to test their new trade and technology skills, and then come together for an interactive live-stream (Dec. 3) to build and share their projects with student participants from other schools across Alberta.

Student participants must be available to commit to morning meetings (8:00-8:45 AM) on the following days:

  • Mon. Nov. 18
  • Fri. Nov. 22
  • Mon. Nov. 25

Email Mr. Perez, CTF Learning Leader (haperezcorbo@cbe.ab.ca) to indicate interest.

Alberta Emergency Alert Service Test – Wed. Nov. 20, 1:55 PM

As you are aware, Albertans can receive messages about life-threatening emergencies, such as tornadoes, wildfires, floods, or Amber Alerts, directly to their cellphones. This wireless public alerting is a national initiative that works with the Alberta Emergency Alert system to send potentially life-saving emergency instructions to all connected/compatible cellphones in the threatened community. On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 1:55 PM, the National Public Alerting System will send a test alert across Alberta to all broadcast platforms. During the test, an alert will sound, followed by a text message letting cellphone users know the sound is part of a test and there is no need for concern.  Teachers will prepare students to understand the purpose for this alert service, as well as to alleviate any of their potential worries.

WMPA Bottle Drive, Dec. 5-7

In order to enhance music programming, the Woodman Music Parents’ Association is holding a bottle drive.  Bottles may be dropped off at the trailer in the NE corner of the staff parking lot, in between Thurs. Dec. 5, 4:00 pm – Sat. Dec. 7, 1:00 PM. Families of Grade 8-9 band students participating in the evening concert on Dec. 5 may bring their bottles to the event.  All other families can also support by having their children bring a bag of refundables to school, and asking neighbours and friends to do the same. Thank you for beginning to collect your bottles in advance!
