Dear Woodman Families
On the eve of this Thanksgiving weekend, we wish our families time to reflect and celebrate together. We are thankful for you, and for the joy and purpose that working with your children gives the Woodman staff.
There is no school on Mon. Oct. 14, and regular classes resume on Tues. Oct. 15. Take note of a few important messages for the week of Oct. 15-18.
Successful Basketball Hosting Week
We commend our teacher-coaches for their hours of coaching and hosting basketball games from various other schools in our main gymnasium this past week. Special thank you to the spectators who attended, and for their respectful and supportive participation.
IPP Distribution and Parent Signature Page
Families of children with Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) were provided with their working copy today. Please review the IPP together with your child; it is a living document and intended to reflect the voice and input of your child in their learning. Signing and returning the Parent Signature Page is a legal accountability that we request your assistance with. Please return the sheet next week.
Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth – Ukrainian Student Meet-and-Greet
We welcome in-school settlement worker, Svetlana, to Woodman school on Tuesday afternoon. A special meet-and-greet will occur at 3:00 pm for Svetlana to connect with Ukrainian and Russian speaking students who are new to Canada (within the last two years).
Grade 9 Quebec Trip - Deadline Postponed to Wed. Oct. 16
Thank you to the families who have expressed interest in participating in the Quebec trip in April 2025. As was previously communicated, the deadline for submitting the CBE Financial Commitment Form has been extended, to accommodate families who have been in touch, expressing interest in participating. Please contact Mme. Wister (mewister@cbe.ab.ca) with any questions you may have. More information about first payment will follow the Oct. 16 deadline, for all families who applied.
Haysboro Care and Preschool Survey
We recognize the challenges that some families have with arranging childcare and managing differing start and end times for siblings in various schools. The Haysboro Community Association volunteer board is researching opening a Before and Afterschool Care program at the HCA hall. We encourage Woodman families to respond to the survey. The data will support future programming in the Haysboro community:
Backpacks in Lockers
We request parent reinforcement of new guidelines for students, commencing next week. All backpacks should be stored in lockers throughout the school day. This assists with reducing clutter in classrooms and minimizes slip, trip and fall hazards (especially in Career Technology Foundations classes). These risks increase when backpacks are brought into class and are placed on the floor. Storing backpacks in lockers also reinforces the new provincial legislation, which states that Personal Mobile Devices should be powered off and stored in lockers for the day - not in pockets or backpacks. Thank you for your support and understanding.
Cooler Weather Coming
The current forecast for next week calls for the beginning of cooler temperatures. Students are reminded to wear appropriate outdoor clothing in order to be comfortably spend 20 minutes outside over the lunch hour. School doors open at 8:55 am; we encourage punctual, but not-too-early arrival at school.
Healthy Hunger Offerings
As the weather patterns change, students increasingly welcome the opportunity to have their lunch delivered to the comfort and warmth of the school building. Healthy Hunger is a student-run program whose proceeds are re-directed back into school experiences and enhancements. The menu for the following weeks is as follows:
Tues. Oct. 15 Subway
Thurs. Oct. 17 Boston Pizza
Fri. Oct. 18 Jelly Donut

Thurs. Oct. 24 Opa! (students on field trips should cancel order, or not order at all)

Grade 6 Friendship with France
Our Grade 6 class will be embarking on a fantastic partnership program with a Grade 6 class from École élémentaire de Fontaine-les-Luxeuil in Bésançon, France. Every year, CBE and DRAREIC (Regional Delegation for European International Relations and Cooperation) organize virtual exchanges between classes in Besançon, France, and Calgary, Canada. This program fosters cross-cultural understanding and provides an excellent opportunity for students to connect with their peers on a global scale. Various activities have been planned to enrich the learning such as: Pen Pal relationships, virtual communications/language sessions, and creation of online audio albums. We commend our students and teachers for applying their French to real world contexts!
