Woodman Weekly Oct. 16-20 | Wellness Day, Volunteer!, Fall Break, Outstanding Fees, School Council, Basketball, Athletics

Dear Woodman Families:

We had many learning highlights this week. For some students, it was the first time they had paddled a canoe, boarded a yellow school bus, or visited the Central Calgary Public Library!

Take note of a few important messages for the week of Oct. 16-20. Friday, Oct. 20 is a CBE professional learning day for teachers, and there is no school for students.

Wellness Day – “A Celebration of All That We Are”

We need your contributions towards building inter-cultural awareness and a celebration of peaceful co-existence at Woodman. Our Wellness Day on Fri. Oct. 27th is centered on highlighting the immense variety of cultures, histories and languages represented within the school. Please send any photos, samples of written language forms, traditions and stories to Mr. Homewood by Mon. Oct. 23rd (smhomewood@cbe.ab.ca). Student identifying information, including names, is not required. This presentation will be shared with Woodman students in their homeroom classes.

Volunteer Your Time, Skills and Talents!

We thank the many parent volunteers for having accompanied classes on field trips and assisted with athletic coaching over the last six weeks.  Here are a few important upcoming areas in which continued involvement would be appreciated:

  • 8-10 volunteers to assist with a special lunch for students, served this coming Wellness Day on Friday October 27th, 10:00-12:30.  Email Ms. Middleton at lmmiddleton@cbe.ab.ca for more details.
  • Particular skills and passions to support our Career Technology Foundations courses, such as Foods, Construction, Design Studies, Art and Music.  Email woodman@cbe.ab.ca to let us know what skills you can share with students. We thank a Woodman parent, who is a professional Photographer, for leading a class with Mme. Rude next week.

Any volunteer in the CBE must follow processes for obtaining a Police Security Clearance. Learn more here:

IPP Distribution and Parent Signature Page

Families of children with Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) were provided with their working copy today.  Please review the IPP together with your child; it is a living document and intended to reflect the voice and input of your child in their learning.  Signing and returning the Parent Signature Page is a legal accountability that we request your assistance with.  Please return the sheet next week.

CBE Fall Break

Families were provided with a calendar of important dates on the first day of school.  New this school year is a Fall Break for all CBE schools, from Thurs. Nov. 9 - Tues. Nov. 14. Please take note of this break from school within your family calendar and plans. A digital version of our important dates may be accessed here: 2023-2024 Woodman School Calendar.

Remember Last Year’s “Choose Your Adventure” and “Track Day”?

We kindly request that families whose children attended Woodman last school year to check their MyCBE Fees account. Please pay outstanding fees related to two June events – “Choose Your Adventure” field trip and the “Track-and-Field Day”. These events provided much fun for students, but are not free. We make every attempt to keep enriched learning experiences as cost effective as possible. By helping us clear our accounts, the school is able to continue to offer similar learning experiences in the future.

School Council

Woodman School Council is a group of Woodman families and staff that work collaboratively together to have a positive impact on student success.

We encourage all Woodman families to become actively involved in School Council by attending our virtual meetings, by reading our minutes shared in the Woodman Weekly, or by volunteering your time as a school council member.

We are actively looking for parents to help with several important roles, including Volunteer Coordinator, Key Communicator, Vice Chair, Fundraising Coordinator, and Staff Appreciation Coordinator.  Any questions can be directed to Tara at ParentCouncilWoodman@gmail.com

Our first meeting will be October 24, 7:00 pm. It will be hosted virtually through the following Microsoft Teams link: Click here to join the meeting

Woodman Hosts Basketball Games

We will host home basketball games in our main gymnasium on Monday and Thursday, commencing at 4:30 pm. Woodman student spectators are invited to join for the first game of the event, and are not required to have a parent companion. Following the first game, they will be requested to exit the school, unless they are joined by a parent or supervising adult.  Non-Woodman student spectators require being accompanied.  CBE middle schools are all following similar processes in order to maintain safety and an orderly, after-hours experience in our buildings.
