Woodman Weekly Oct. 30 - Nov. 3 | Guest Speaker, Halloween, Take Your Kid to Work Day, Fees, Parent Input, High School Transition, Fun Lunch, School Council, Athletics

Dear Woodman Families:

Students were actively involved in the many Wellness Day activities planned for today. They created beautiful cultural blankets for their classroom doors that highlight their personal and cultural identities, with messages of inclusion and welcome for those entering their classrooms. Thank you to the many donations and the volunteerism from parents to make today’s activities possible, especially in helping us serve lunch to all of our students.

Take note of a few important messages for the week of Oct. 30 – Nov. 3:

Guest Speaker – Valour Canada, Grade 7 and 8E

On Monday, select classes will participate in a presentation about the Battle of Vimy Ridge and some of the technologies introduced during the First World War. The presentation will finish with some viewing and exploration of historical artefacts.

Halloween Festivities – Tues. Oct. 31

As was mentioned last week, the Leadership 9 class has been busy designing and constructing a spooky walk experience on the upper and lower stage area. Each homeroom class will be invited to promenade through the walk. Several activity stations geared towards younger grades are also being developed.

We send another friendly reminder of expectations for costumes, should students choose to dress up:

  • Due to safety and security reasons, full face masks and toy weapons should be kept at home.
  • Please choose a simple costume that minimizes on slip, trip and fall hazards; students still need to transport their books/binders from class to class, and to do so in an easy manner
  • Costumes should not reflect violent or sexualized imagery, or reflect cultural appropriation of any sort. Cultural appropriation can be described as perpetuating a cultural/ethnic stereotype or trivializing a tradition.
  • Good judgement and decision-making between parent and child is requested

Thurs. Nov. 2, Grade 9 Take Your Kid to Work Day

As per the message in the last Woodman Weekly, please ensure that if your Grade 9 child is participating in Take Your Kid to Work Day, you inform the school about your child’s absence from school:

  • Send the email permission any time prior to Thurs. Nov. 2 at 9:00 AM, at woodmanattendance@cbe.ab.ca
  • Use subject line: Kid Work - [student first last name]
  • Refrain from sending phone calls to the office or attendance line for this event

School Fees Posted to MyCBE

The minister of education has approved certain fees to families to ensure a high quality educational experience. School based fees have now been posted to parent accounts in MyCBE. Grade 7-9 families will note the fees for some option classes, which cover consumable items such as wood, paint, food ingredients, etc. Grade 7-9 families also pay a $10 lunch activity fee which covers special events, guest speakers, etc. Note that these fees are school-based, not central. Central fees charged by the CBE include: transportation, musical instrument rental fees, and Grade 5-6 lunch supervision. For more information, please call the main office.

Parent Input on Remembrance Day Planning

Each year, CBE schools commemorate Remembrance Day on, or close to Nov. 11.  Woodman School will hold its ceremony on Wed. Nov. 8th, 10:45 am. This is a time for Canadians to commemorate those who have served in combat, fostered peace in our country, and participated in peace-keeping missions across the globe. We are cognizant of, and sensitive towards the effects of war that some of our students and their extended families have, or are currently, enduring.  Because of this, we invite parent input on the content and general approach of the ceremony.  The thematic question is: “How do we build peace in times like these?”  Please email Principal Krickhan any thoughts or wishes (woodman@cbe.ab.ca).

Grade 9 High School Transition D2L Shell

Grade 9 students have been added to a D2L shell which will house all information related to their transition to high school. Open House information for various high schools will be uploaded to this site shortly.  Further conversations will be held with students in class in the upcoming weeks. The focus of the Nov. 28th virtual School Council Meeting (7:00 pm) will include a special presentation on High School Transition.  We encourage all Grade 9 parents to attend.

Healthy Hunger Bookings – November

We resume the offerings of Healthy Hunger on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, commencing after the Fall Break.  Please log on to www.healthyhunger.ca to view orders for Nov. 21st onward, including Wok Box, A&W, Cobs and more. Leadership students run this initiative. Proceeds are directed towards school enhancements, as determined by student input.

School Council AGM and Educational Society Updates

We thank the families who attended the Council AGM and Educational Society meeting last Tuesday.  These two parent groups have voted in an ambitious and aligned group of parents who make solid decisions on behalf of all families in the school.  Meeting minutes will be shared with parents in the upcoming Woodman Weekly.

Woodman’s Casino Event – Jan. 19-20

Earlier this week, information was sent to all families that signed up to receive commercial emails. Visit the website for more information on how you can assist the Educational Society’s fundraising efforts: https://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/woodman/get-involved/volunteer/pages/default.aspx
